Now that 2009 has come to a close and 2010 has begun, I can safely say that it’s a year that has been very challenging and although I am not the least bit sad to see 2009 go, it certainly was not without some really incredible experiences for me that I would like to highlight before wipe the slate clean and start fresh with 2010.
This list was especially difficult to narrow down since 2009 was the year I kicked my blogging into high gear. I had started Ryan’s Incredible World in 2007 didn’t actually start blogging until 2008 and I would maybe make no more than five entries a month. So picking my highlights of 2008 was relatively easy since there wasn’t so many blog entries to go through to pick out the defining moments.
I had joined a couple of 30-Day blogging challenges which requires 30 blog entries in 30 days and it essentially got me into the habit of making almost daily blog entries. Now it’s pretty safe to say that each month sees about 25 new blog entries. The constant blogging has actually helped bring a bigger audience to my blog, so if your first time reading any of my writing has been in 2009, then no doubt something I wrote in 2009 caught your eye and is why you’re here reading this entry now. I am grateful for the many folks who’ve read my blog and left me comments, it’s been a pleasure to hear your feedback throughout the year. In any case, I looked through every post of 2009 to select what I feel were the 10 Most Incredible Things about 2009 that happened for me. You’ll note I combined a few complimentary things to narrow it down to 10.
I do hope you enjoy my reflection on 2009 and continue to join me on my quest to find the most incredible things of 2010. Without further ado, in no particular order.

In addition to seeing the Speak & Spell when I was browsing through the channels, I also came across an infomercial for a weight loss program called “The Food Lovers Fat Loss System” by some mysterious guy named Robert Ferguson. I stopped to watch the infomercial out of curiosity to what the gimmick of diet program is. And from what I saw, it looks to me that the program is very similar to what I’ve learned on Jorge Cruise’s Belly Fat Cure program.
The infomercial claims that its possible to still eat all your favorite foods and do so in a way that makes it so that it will speed up your metabolism and help you lose weight. It then has some older lady with lesbian-esque spikey hair proclaims she can eat chocolate, pastas with cream sauces, pancakes, and has kept the weight off for over four years. My first thoughts were, yeah, all of those can be done on the Belly Fat Cure, but how can this lady have kept the weight off for four years if this a program that looks pretty new? Robert Ferguson then says you’ll eat so you’ll never be hungry, never have food you don’t like, and never deprive yourself of the foods you love.

Burger King’s claim to fame is their slogan where they invite you to “Have It Your Way” where they encourage you to customize your burger or other food items to however you like it. They even go so far as to claim there are over 240,000 different combinations of how to customize the items on their menu. And despite all this, when I decided to stop at my local Burger King in Poway, they failed miserably on the customization I was seeking.
I stopped in to my local Burger King and after reviewing the nutritional information they had posted on the wall, it looked like the only way I was going to be able to get a burger with relatively no sugar, was to ask and see if they could wrap the burger in lettuce instead of a bun. I went to the counter and asked if it was possible to have the burgers wrapped in lettuce instead of a bun, the girl at the counter didn’t know, asked her manager as she had no idea how to even ring in the burger and have it wrapped in lettuce. The manager said it would be possible and that she would take care of letting the staff in back that would be assembling the burger know to use lettuce instead of a bun.

Yesterday, the American Heart Association (AHA) released a scientific statement recommending the reduction of added sugar consumption indicating that there is a high correlation of metabolic abnormalities, adverse health conditions, and shortfalls in essential nutrients with excessive sugar intake. This marks the first time the AHA has recommended specific limits on the consumption of added sugars according to an article posted on the AHA’s website (Click here to read it.) If you are person who normally eats food containing significant amounts of sugar then we recommend contacting your Doctor, you can look at this site to get a few recommendations.
According the AHA, Americans are consuming on the average 22 teaspoons (approx 108 grams) of sugar per day, and it is recommending that women should have no more than 6 teaspoons (approximately 30 grams) of sugar and men no more than 9 teaspoons (approximately 44 grams) of sugar. The AHA also tries to make a distinction between naturally occurring sugars such as those found in fruits and vegetables with highly processed sugars such as refined sugars and syrups indicating the more highly processed sugars are linked to the rise of obesity, as well as high blood pressure, high triglyceride levels, in addition to higher risk for heart disease, stroke, and inflammation.
The biggest culprit for the high amounts of the processed sugar occurring in the American diet are soft drinks and other sugar sweetened beverages. To put this into perspective, a 12 ounce can of Coca-Cola possess 39 grams of sugar. This exceeds the daily recommendation for women and doesn’t leave much room for more sugar for men according to the AHA’s recommended sugar guidelines. A 20 ounce bottle of Coca-Cola has 69 grams of sugar, more than double the recommended sugar level for women and more than 20 grams more sugar than recommended for me.

Jorge Cruise recently posted to YouTube a trailer for his upcoming “Death By Sugar” documentary. The footage that’s included in the trailer is from the sugar experiments that I helped Jorge out with on July 16th. As opposed to the other YouTube clips that were shot on Jorge Cruise’s iPhone, this footage is from the professionally filmed footage taken by Jared Davis.
The short four minute clip provides a good overview of the blood analysis that Dr. Stefan Bajon conducted on my blood both before and after consuming 200 grams of sugar. The initial analysis showed I had very healthy blood featuring individualized cells which help produce energy and carry oxygen throughout my body. In the words of Dr. Bajon, “That is about as healthy a picture of blood as I could ever see.” Definitely a great encouraging thing to see and hear when being checked out by the doctor.
We then followed that up with the consumption of about 200 grams of sugar, which included a large banana, a cup of yogurt, two low-fat Strawberry Pop Tarts, as well as a glass of Orange Juice and a 20 oz. Pepsi. Overall not a lot of food, but easily what a lot of people would consume as a breakfast and maybe an additional snack too. These are all things commonly found in just about any kitchen.

One of the things that I suppose is both good and bad about growing up in one place and moving to another is that you get to experience different things, but you also get nostalgic for the things that you can’t get in the new place that were readily available where you used to live. So as a Canadian living in San Diego, I tend to miss some of the things that were readily available in Canada that aren’t readily available here in San Diego. Fortunately, there are some great Canadians who are helping make sure former Canadians can get their fix for Canadian items, such as Rob and Elena Peters.
In what is becoming a more common way of meeting people, I met Elena Peters through Twitter. Somehow she found one of my twitter accounts and started following me. I occasionally peek at who is following me on my twitter accounts I was certainly curious about this “GoCanuck” that was following me, so I clicked over to read some of the tweets made on Twitter as well as follow the link to her site. It looks like Elena spends some time in San Diego every year and I had unfortunately just missed her most recent visit which included a Canada Day celebration that sounded like a fun event to be at. I certainly would have gone to celebrate Canada Day with other Canadians here in San Diego if I had known about the event beforehand.

I recently took an opportunity to try Kentucky Fried Chicken’s new Grilled Chicken, and was absolutely amazed at how incredibly good it was. Part of the reason for giving it a try is because of the running program I have been doing since the start of December and I was tired of fixing my own meals. I needed a little break from the routine.
I occasionally like to have a meal at KFC about once every two to three months and so this time instead of having the Original Recipe Chicken as a guilty pleasure. I decided to get the Grilled Chicken meal and replace the standard sides with corn on the cob and baked beans for as reasonably healthy a meal as possible.
The meal was really, really good. I was expecting the chicken to be dry, but it was quite the opposite, it was very juicy and flavorful. It tastes nothing like the Original Recipe Chicken, as the chicken isn’t breaded. According to a press release regarding the Grilled Chicken, the chicken (in marketing speak) “is marinated and seasoned with a savory blend
of secret herbs and spices and then grilled to juicy perfection.” I’m sure probably the same herbs and spices they have in their secret recipe are used on the chicken, but they’re put right on the chicken itself. It was amazing. The corn on the cob was also delicious, I haven’t had corn on the cob in years, it tasted incredibly fresh and was so hot in the foil wrap. I’m not usually a fan of beans, but the baked beans were a great addition to the meal that tasted good too. It tasted too good to be a healthy meal.
