Fat Head Says Super Size Me Is Full Of Bologna

Perhaps you’ve seen Morgan Spurlock’s documentary, “Super Size Me” where he takes McDonald’s to task with an experiment over 30 days to see how unhealthy McDonald’s food is. Well, filmmaker Tom Naughton, decides to do the same experiment but prove it’s possible to lose weight eating only fast food for 30 days and in the process takes not only Morgan Spurlock to task, but also the US Government, consumer action groups, and basically every diet and exercise guru who advocate low fat, high carb diets.

Naughton points out that in Morgan Spurlock’s “Super Size Me”, Spurlock consumed over 5,000 calories a day, which by anyone’s standards, would be likely to make anyone fat. But Spurlock had three rules he was going to follow, he ate only three meals a day, would try everything on the menu at least once, and would super size the meal if asked by the clerk. Naughton pokes a hole in this because there’s no way he could put together three meals a day and hit that calorie level without adding extra food. Spurlock gained over 25 pounds during his experiment, and it’s Naughton’s claim that Spurlock intentionally “Mc-Stuffed” himself because had he only gained four or five pounds, it wouldn’t have been as dramatic a film. And repeated efforts to contact Morgan Spurlock to review his food log were refused.

Under The Boardwalk Documentary Showcases Monopoly

If you were asked to name the first board game that comes to mind, would that game you name be Monopoly? Arguably, Monopoly is the most celebrated board game in the history of board games. It has recently had its 75th anniversary and there is no sign of it’s popularity slowing down. Monopoly is as much part of pop culture as it is a board game. And there are so many ways to play the game, you’d be hard pressed to find anyone these days that hasn’t heard of the game. With a game as popular as Monopoly, you almost have to wonder why it took so long for there to be a documentary about it.

What is it about Monopoly that has made the game such an enduring success for so many decades? San Diego based filmmaker, Kevin Tostado decided to find out. Not only did Tostodo explore the history of the game, he traced the enduring legacy of the game in popular culture, met with serious collectors that like to collect just about anything that the Monopoly brand has licensed, and even spoke to a winner of the million dollar grand prize in McDonald’s annual Monopoly game. Perhaps the highlight of Tostado’s exploration of Monopoly was following some of the game’s most competitive players through the 2009 international championships, where every four years the national champions from over forty countries compete in hopes of being crowned the newest World Monopoly Champion. Kevin Tostado compiled his findings and presents an extensive look at the world of Monopoly in his new movie entitled “Under The Boardwalk: The Monopoly Story.”

Boston’s Gourmet Pizza Brings Canadian Pizza To Encinitas

It seems when it comes to pizza, you often are faced with several choices, such as New York Thin Crust style verses Chicago Deep Dish style. Then it’s often between mom and pop locations and the “chain” places. And even within the “chains” you get a choice between the cheap and mediocre places, like Pizza Hut, Papa John’s, Domino’s, and Little Caesar’s which are to pizza what McDonald’s is to hamburgers. And there are even more premium chain places like Round Table Pizza, California Pizza Kitchen, Sammy’s Woodfired Pizzas, and Chicago UNO, that offer better pizza experiences. Joining the foray of the premium style chains, one of Canada’s most popular pizza chains, Boston Pizza, are expanding into the United States branding these locations as “Boston’s Gourmet Pizza” and positioning themselves as a restaurant and sports bar offering two experiences under one roof.

You may be asking, if Boston’s Gourmet Pizza originates from Canada, why do they call themselves “Boston’s” instead of some city in Canada? Well the answer to that lies in its history, as Boston Pizza was started by a Greek Immigrant to Canada in 1964. When he was looking for a name for his pizza place that he was starting in Edmonton, Alberta, he felt with The Boston Bruins, The Boston Red Sox, The Boston Celtics, and even Boston Creme Pie, the name Boston was recognizable and established. In the words of founder, Gus Agioritis, Boston meant “Big Leagues.” The company grew quickly through franchising quickly and today has over 325 locations throughout Canada and over 50 in the US since the company first expanded into the US in 1998.

The Big Carl Is Quite Awesome – Belly Fat Cure Compliant If Customized

Big CarlWhen McDonald’s started selling Angus One-Third Pound Burgers, it took a page from West Coast burger chain, Carl’s Jr, which introduced sit-down restaurant style burgers a few years ago under the name “The Six Dollar Burger” which they were selling for $3.99. So in response to McDonald’s introduction of similar premium burgers, Carl’s Jr decided to take on McDonald’s head on by introducing their own version of the Big Mac called “The Big Carl.”

The Big Carl takes on the Big Mac, blatantly with a lot of the advertising for it offering side by side comparisons to the Big Mac, some done humorously as if the burgers were talking to each other (think the Apple commercials with Mac vs. Windows except instead of two actors, it’s just closeups of the burgers with voiceovers.) And others use Carl’s Jr.’s more signature sarcastically toned humor as seen in the commercial below which compares the burgers with a take on the old Big Mac song. I particularly like Carl’s more sarcastically toned commercials ever since they introduced a campaign showcasing a guy looking clueless in a supermarket with the slogan, “Without us, some guys would starve.”

Asking McDonald’s To Do A Lettuce Wrapped Burger

McDonald's Angus BurgerAfter the disappointing attempt at getting a lettuce wrapped burger at Burger King, it seemed it would only be fair to try the same thing at McDonald’s and see what the world’s top selling fast food restaurant does when presented with the challenge of being asked to wrap their burger in lettuce instead of a bun.

I decided to try one of the one-third pound Angus, Bacon and Cheese burger, which granted is a bit more of a premium burger than Burger King’s Whopper, but when I asked at the counter at Poway’s McDonald’s, it did seem to be an interesting challenge for them as well. The clerk behind the counter didn’t know if they could and asked one of the managers, and the woman who was managing said it would be no problem. The clerk wasn’t sure how to ring in the customization and finally they just resorted to just telling the cooks verbally to use lettuce to wrap the burger instead of a bun. Or at least, I’m guessing it was said verbally as the discussion was held completely in Spanish, but the guy who would ultimately be assembling the burger didn’t seemed phased at all by the request, and made it without any look of confusion.

I decided to take the burger home so the reveal was delayed a little bit, and sure enough, the burger was put between a couple of the leaves of lettuce that they use on the premium burgers. Fortunately it was sized quite a bit larger than the hand shredded lettuce they just threw on the patty at Burger King. It wasn’t quite a perfect lettuce wrap like they do at Carl’s Jr, In-N-Out Burger, and Red Robin, but this was definitely a much better effort on McDonald’s part than Burger King attempted. As the picture shows, the lettuce on the top side was skimpy but fortunately they used a much larger piece of lettuce on the bottom which was better able to contain the burger.

My New Favorite Burger From In-N-Out’s Secret Menu

in_n_out_double_lettuce_wrapI’d like to introduce you to my new favorite hamburger from In-N-Out Burger. It is called a “Double Meat Protein Style With Ketchup, Mustard, & Pickles” and it’s from In-N-Out Burger’s “Secret Menu.”

For those not familiar with In-N-Out Burger, they are a chain of fast food restaurants that started out at roughly the same time as the McDonald Brothers opened their first hamburger stand. Both companies started out very similar, but how they proceeded into the future from there is about as different as they come. Unlike McDonald’s, In-N-Out Burger is a family run company, they do not have any shareholders, and they do not franchise any of their locations. Being a smaller company that focuses on quality, they’ve only expanded their reach California into the neighboring states of Nevada, Arizona, and Utah. And they’ve achieved such a cult like status that their burgers are often considered a Southern California delicacy.

Additionally, their menu has remained virtually unchanged since the company first opened its doors. Their burger selection is a choice of three, a hamburger, a cheeseburger, and their signature sandwich, the “Double Double” which is a double cheeseburger with two slices of cheese. They also offer French Fries, and the traditional fare of beverage choices, sodas, coffee, teas, lemonades, and milkshakes made from real ice cream. The company prides itself on the fact the company doesn’t own a single freezer ensuring nothing but fresh products. In fact, their French Fries are sliced and diced in the store from real potatoes.

Guilty Pleasure – McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish

McDonald's Filet-O-FishWith today being the last Friday before Easter, I am going to allow myself to indulge in a guilty pleasure. That guilty pleasure is the McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish sandwich.

I am not a big fan of seafood by any stretch of the imagination. I find Salmon to be repulsive, and can’t stomach things like Calamari. But I do like Tuna, Cod, Mahi Mahi, Pollack, and Halibut. The kinds of fish that don’t taste overly fishy. I’ve even tried Sushi, but I just can’t get around feeling like I need to gag every time I try it. So I tend to go for fish that’s like what’s found in Fish & Chips meals, Fish tacos, and Fish sandwiches like McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish.

The only time of year I like to have the McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish sandwich is during Lent. It’s not because I’m honoring any faith by any stretch of the imagination, it’s because it’s the only time McDonald’s charges what I think the sandwiches are worth. A few years ago, it was great when they were 99 cents, and last year they were sneaky and raised the price up to $1.29 and they kept the same price for this year here in California. The fish sandwiches are so small, I think they are a complete rip off at their regular price, you might as well get a burger instead. I know I shouldn’t be indulging in a fried fish sandwich, but it’s the only time of year I will do so at McDonald’s.

Running Update With Nike+ March 2009

With another month down, it’s time for another status report. March was a pretty good month. Due to the fewer days in February I saw a drop in the total miles run from January to February where I went from 41.67 miles down to 37.45 miles. My total miles run for March was 43.88 which was an increase over the miles run in both January and February. It’s more significant to look at the increase between January and March as both months have the same number of days, the increase over January was 2.21 miles and due to addition of three additional days to the month over February, the increase was 6.43 miles.
