PureVia Now Available At Costco

When I originally started on Jorge Cruise’s Belly Fat Cure Program just about a year ago, the large majority of people weren’t yet aware how dangerous sugar can be to the human body. While it’s still arguable how well aware the public is now, it’s considerably more aware now than a year ago. Truvia and PureVia were just hitting the market and most people still unaware the Coca-Cola and Pepsi Cola are the major backers behind the companies that make these Erythritol and Stevia combinations and helped push their rapid approval through the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be used as a sweetener.

A year ago, you’d be just starting to see Truvia and PureVia hitting the shelves of the average supermarket, and now they’re pretty much a guarantee to be seen there. Both are starting to make their way into beverage products made by the respective cola giants although they’re yet to make their way into the cola giant’s diet versions of their signature products. Perhaps one of the signs that things are changing in a good way is that packets of PureVia are now available in the bulk purchasing giant warehouses of Costco. The super-sized boxes of packets which contain 300 packets are humongous compared to the 40 and 80 count boxes you can typically find in a regular supermarket.

Trying The New Dr. Zevia Flavor

One of my favorite things of 2009, was discovering Zevia’s all natural sodas when I was introduced to the Belly Fat Cure by Jorge Cruise. I’ve been a big fan of Zevia since my very first purchase. Their sodas are all natural, and naturally sugar free, and calorie free. They are sweetened by Stevia, a South American plant who’s name means “sweet leaf” and Erythritol, a sugar alcohol that naturally occurs in plants.

At the time I first started trying Zevia, they only had four flavors, Cola (similar to Coca-Cola or Pepsi), Natural Twist (a lemon-lime soda similar to 7-Up or Sprite), Root Beer (similar to A&W), and Orange (similar to Fanta). Soon after they introduced two new flavors, Ginger Ale (similar to Canada Dry) and Black Cherry (similar to a Cherry 7-Up). And now they’ve introduced a new flavor called, Dr. Zevia, which naturally is similar to Dr. Pepper.

It was quite a while following the introduction of the Ginger Ale and Black Cherry Zevia flavors before I ever found them in the stores, so this time I ordered a couple of cases of the new Dr. Zevia directly from Zevia. Fortunately they were offering a great discount at the time which dropped the price of shipping for the two cases down to just a couple of bucks over top the price of the cases. And after a couple of weeks of waiting for the order to ship and for FedEx Ground Service to deliver it, the Dr. Zevia had finally arrived.

The Downside Of 100+ Coca-Cola Freestyle Fountain Flavors

Coke Freestyle Jack In The BoxToday I decided to introduce my co-worker and roommate to the Coca-Cola Freestyle Fountain machine (which I previously wrote about, click here to read that blog entry). Since there are three Jack In The Box locations in Escondido that have the machine and Escondido is on the way home, we stopped at one just to get drinks to try out the machine. Unfortunately, we ran into one of the downsides of the machine.

The main downside of the machine is that because the Jack In The Box locations get a lot more traffic of visitors than the one I encountered at the Noodles & Company restaurant in San Marcos, the fountain was “Sold Out” of a lot of flavors. Here it is a Sunday morning and all the Fanta Zero flavors are sold out, both regular and diet Barq’s Root Beer are sold out, as well as several other variations which limits the choices. The menu screen doesn’t hide the unavailable choices, but rather changes them to grayed out options that it won’t allow you to select. So you just get stuck knowing there are choices you can’t have at the moment. (Probably a secret plot to make you want those flavors even more.)

Additionally, the busier Jack In The Box locations also meant it was kind of a slow process to get the drink because there was a small line for the machine as each person spent a little bit longer than a traditional fountain to pick and chose what flavors under the various brand labels and in the case of the sold out status of a lot of the more exotic flavor choices many had to go into other menus to pick something else because they weren’t able to try what they wanted from each menu.

Coca-Cola Freestyle Fountain – The Future Of Soda Fountains

Coke Freestyle FountainThe future of Soda Fountain dispensing has arrived, at least in beta testing form. When I stopped at the San Marcos, California location of Noodles & Company to redeem the free bowl of pasta offer I received for my birthday from the chain, I discovered they have installed a new soda fountain machine which according the signs offers over 100 different flavor combinations. Amazingly the machine didn’t seem to be much any bigger space wise than a traditional fountain machine except for the fact it was freestanding instead of having to be mounted on a counter. The opening within which to place the cup seemed to be styled from the “Men In Black” school of retro looking futuristic designs.

Instead of offering individual taps for each of the 100+ flavors, there was just a single opening in the Coca-Cola Freestyle Fountain. You just insert the cup against the lever in the back to have ice drop through the machine into your cup, then just allow the cup to sit in the center while using the touchscreen to pick the brand of beverage to bring up a sub menu of available flavors from which you can choose to fill the cup with. Many of the flavor choices are ones that aren’t available in retail stores as bottled choices because there simply is no way any store would ever carry that many different flavors.

New York City Campaign Asks If You’re Pouring On The Pounds

Pouring On The PoundsIt seems like in no time at all Sugar has gone from the perceived image of being completely harmless to two major blows within the course of a week. Last week the American Heart Association warned of the dangers of too much sugar consumption citing that Americans should not consume more than 6 teaspoons of sugar in a day for women and 9 teaspoons of sugar in a day for men. This week the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene for New York City has launched a campaign targeting the dangers of consuming too much sugar from liquid sources such as soft drinks, sports drinks, and sweetened iced teas. The campaign is called “Pouring On The Pounds” and features some aggressively graphic imagery of a sugary beverage being poured into a glass, however before the liquid hits the glass, it’s become a “glob” of fat.

The campaign asks “Are You Pouring On The Pounds?” and then recommends replacing the sugar loaded beverages with water, seltzer, or low-fat milk as a substitute. The heart of the campaign is definitely the visual as their ads feature a soda bottle shaped a lot like a Coca-Cola bottle, a sports drink bottle that resembles Gatorade, and a sweetened iced tea that looks a lot like Snapple. Obviously they can’t show the brands, but are trying to aim for ones you can identify from the shapes of their bottles. The gross image of the fat in the glass, conveniently overflowing out of the glass is very powerful. The image seems to be designed to get people to pay attention to what they’re drinking. It’s all to easy to forget about the liquids we drink in a day when taking a look at how much sugar we consume in a day. Most people can easily see the foods we eat as a source, but liquids we tend to forget because we don’t always see them as food too.

American Heart Association Declares Sugar As Dangerous

SugarYesterday, the American Heart Association (AHA) released a scientific statement recommending the reduction of added sugar consumption indicating that there is a high correlation of metabolic abnormalities, adverse health conditions, and shortfalls in essential nutrients with excessive sugar intake. This marks the first time the AHA has recommended specific limits on the consumption of added sugars according to an article posted on the AHA’s website (Click here to read it.) If you are person who normally eats food containing  significant amounts of sugar then we recommend contacting your Doctor, you can look at this site to get a few recommendations.

According the AHA, Americans are consuming on the average 22 teaspoons (approx 108 grams) of sugar per day, and it is recommending that women should have no more than 6 teaspoons (approximately 30 grams) of sugar and men no more than 9 teaspoons (approximately 44 grams) of sugar. The AHA also tries to make a distinction between naturally occurring sugars such as those found in fruits and vegetables with highly processed sugars such as refined sugars and syrups indicating the more highly processed sugars are linked to the rise of obesity, as well as high blood pressure, high triglyceride levels, in addition to higher risk for heart disease, stroke, and inflammation.

The biggest culprit for the high amounts of the processed sugar occurring in the American diet are soft drinks and other sugar sweetened beverages. To put this into perspective, a 12 ounce can of Coca-Cola possess 39 grams of sugar. This exceeds the daily recommendation for women and doesn’t leave much room for more sugar for men according to the AHA’s recommended sugar guidelines. A 20 ounce bottle of Coca-Cola has 69 grams of sugar, more than double the recommended sugar level for women and more than 20 grams more sugar than recommended for me.

Death By Sugar – Two Experiments For Jorge Cruise’s Upcoming Documentary

Death By Sugar - A Documentary By Jorge CruiseOn Wednesday morning I received an early morning call from Jorge Cruise who wanted to know if I’d be willing to participate in a little experiment for his documentary that’s tentatively being called “Death By Sugar.” After he explained what he was looking to achieve, I was definitely willing to participate, albeit a little hesitant about consuming a high quantity of sugar for the experiment.

The tests were going to involve some blood draws and in order to get a pure sample Jorge called me early to ensure he caught before I had any food for the day. So I agreed to have nothing but water between then and the noon meeting time at the office of Dr. James Novak in Pacific Beach. When I got to Dr. Novak’s clinic, Jorge was already there waiting for me. I was introduced to Jared Davis who was here to film the experiment and Kelly Wiggin, a nurse in Dr. Novak’s office, who like me had been through Jorge’s Belly Fat Cure Program and lost weight. Kelly had been in an earlier test case group and she will be featured in the final version of the Belly Fat Cure book so be sure to look for her testimonial when the book comes out! Kelly was going to be in charge of taking my blood draws.

The initial experiment was going to consist of a blood draw to show what my blood looks like with no food in my system for over 14 hours. So basically blood in a fasted state. Then I was to consume approximately 300 grams of sugar, and then we would do three additional blood draws, one at ten minutes following the sugar, one at thirty minutes following the sugar, and then again at one hour following the sugar. Now keep in mind, I’ve been on Jorge Cruise’s Belly Fat Cure program for the last 12 weeks and I’ve had no more than 15 grams of sugar per day in those 12 week, most of the time I’ve averaged about 7 to 10 grams of sugar per day. So a meal consisting of 300 grams of sugar was going to be more sugar in one sitting than I’ve had in the last 30 days combined.

Zevia & Clemmy’s Makes Amazing Sugar Free Ice Cream Floats

Orange Zevia FloatHave made some awesome Sugar Free Chocolate Milkshakes the other day (click here to read about it), I was curious of other ways to experiment with the sugar free ice cream. And since it’s summer here in the Northern Hemisphere, a great summer treat is a float. But traditional floats can be loaded with sugar between the ice cream and then when you add on top of a soda, you’re just asking for sugar overload.

Well since I have some Clemmy’s Sugar Free Ice Cream on hand in the incredibly awesome Vanilla Bean flavor, it’s perfect for mixing into a float. And since I’m also a big fan of Zevia‘s Natural Diet Soda in all it’s flavors (Cola, Twist, Root Beer, Orange, Black Cherry, and Ginger Ale) I’ve got plenty of opportunities to try the various combinations. I was certainly leaning towards the Root Beer and Cola flavors as most people usually do A&W Root Beer Floats or Coca-Cola floats, but I ultimately decided I wanted to try an Orange Float in the hopes it would taste a bit more like an old fashioned Creamsicle. I was not disappointed.

Zevia‘s Orange soda perfectly compliments Clemmy’s Sugar Free Vanilla Bean Ice Cream. The treat was completely sugar free and the ice cream does add a couple of servings of carbohydrates, but nothing out of the ordinary. This is a perfectly delicious treat to try if you’re on Jorge Cruise’s Belly Fat Cure Program. It comes out absolutely delicious. It tastes just like a Creamsicle and isn’t going to blow your diet since there’s no sugar at all in the treat.

Zevia – My New Favorite Brand Of Sodas

Zevia Natural Diet Soda LogoIn my time in Jorge Cruise’s Belly Fat Cure program, one of the best new product recommendations I’ve received is to replace soda with Zevia Brand Sodas. Zevia’s tag line is “Natural Diet Soda” and by natural, it means the ingredients are all derived from natural sources. Zevia is naturally sweetened with Stevia (a natural sweetener made from the leaves of plants from the sunflower family originating from Central and South America) and Erythritol (a sugar alcohol made from fruits and vegetables). Even the caffeine in Zevia Cola (the only flavor to contain any caffeine) is derived from coffee.

Sure you may have seen “Natural” sodas before, but most of those are loaded with even more sugar than Coca-Cola. And you’ve probably seen “Diet” sodas which are usually loaded with artificial sweeteners like aspartame (Nutrasweet), sucralose (Splenda), and saccharin (Sweet ‘N Low). Zevia is different because its an all natural soda that is zero calories, zero sugar, zero net carbs, zero rating on glycemic index and it’s even certified as Kosher. Anther healthy benefits of Zevia is that the soda will not cause tooth decay. The natural sweeteners don’t ferment when they come into contact with bacteria in the mouth and Zevia doesn’t use phosphoric acid found in other sodas which has been known to eat away at tooth enamel and deplete the body of calcium.

Star Trek: The Experience in Las Vegas Closes

After a little more than a decade, Star Trek: The Experience at the Las Vegas Hilton shuts it’s doors. The closure comes as contract renewal talks between Paramount/CBS, Cedar Fair, and Colony Capital stalled. The main hold out was Colony Capital who owns the Las Vegas Hilton, who bought the Hilton from Caesars Entertainment (formerly Park Place Entertainment at the time Star Trek: The Experience opened) didn’t like the deal where Star Trek: The Experience was like a retailer just renting space, and not sharing in the revenue generated from the attraction. Cedar Fair, the company that bought the operations of the attraction from Paramount Parks and Paramount/CBS who owns the Star Trek franchise weren’t able to secure a renewal of the contract and as such has decided to close Star Trek: The Experience.

The last day of operations for Star Trek: The Experience was September 1, 2008 and concluded the business day with a decommissioning ceremony normally only afforded to the decommissioning of naval vessels. Star Trek gets a lot of it’s lore from naval tradition except instead of sailing the waters, its the stars. Despite the fact the current contract doesn’t expire until the end of the year, the decision to close on September 1st, is to allow Cedar Fair the time necessary to return all the Star Trek property back to Paramount and gut the complex to hand it over to Colony Capital as empty space.
