My First Official ABBA T-Shirts

ABBA T-shirtsI just purchased my very first “official” ABBA T-Shirts. Sure I’ve had a couple of t-shirts promoting the ABBAMAIL website I used to write columns for and have a couple of unofficial shirts here and there, but now I have legitimate and real ABBA T-shirts that even have official ABBA tags in the collar. How cool is that?

I ordered the shirts from ABBA’s official website at ABBAsite.com and the webshop there is really a specialty shop with fulfillment handled by a great Swedish music retailer, Bengans.se. I’ve ordered tons of music from them over the years and they’re a great shop. So acting as ABBA’s official store, they have in addition to the ability to purchase music CDs and DVDs, they have some merchandise. They’ve had merchandise in their webshop for a couple of years now, but I’ve never ordered any because let’s face it, they didn’t make T-shirts in my size. Well that was before I started losing weight with Jorge Cruise’s Belly Fat Cure program.

Canadian Goodies From GoCanuck.com

Candian Goodies From GoCanuck.comOne of the things that I suppose is both good and bad about growing up in one place and moving to another is that you get to experience different things, but you also get nostalgic for the things that you can’t get in the new place that were readily available where you used to live. So as a Canadian living in San Diego, I tend to miss some of the things that were readily available in Canada that aren’t readily available here in San Diego. Fortunately, there are some great Canadians who are helping make sure former Canadians can get their fix for Canadian items, such as Rob and Elena Peters.

In what is becoming a more common way of meeting people, I met Elena Peters through Twitter. Somehow she found one of my twitter accounts and started following me. I occasionally peek at who is following me on my twitter accounts I was certainly curious about this “GoCanuck” that was following me, so I clicked over to read some of the tweets made on Twitter as well as follow the link to her site. It looks like Elena spends some time in San Diego every year and I had unfortunately just missed her most recent visit which included a Canada Day celebration that sounded like a fun event to be at. I certainly would have gone to celebrate Canada Day with other Canadians here in San Diego if I had known about the event beforehand.

Amazing Sugar Free Chocolate Chip Cookies

Sugar Free Chocolate Chip Cookies Made With Hershey's Sugar Free Chocolate ChipsAfter having been on Jorge Cruise’s Belly Fat Cure program for a while, I’d been craving Chocolate Chip cookies. There had to be a way to make sugar free chocolate chip cookies, and probably a better way than chopping up chunks of unsweetened chocolate. Well, Kim Barry, another person who’s been through the Belly Fat Cure program recommended finding Hershey’s Sugar Free Chocolate Chips. Easier said than done.

A Google search for Hershey’s Sugar Free Chocolate chips reveals Wal-Mart carries the chips, but according to their store locator, none of them within 100 miles of me carry any. By plugging in some random cities, it seems that it’s only the Wal-Mart Supercenters that have them, and there’s none of those in San Diego county. I found some various online stores that seem to sell them for about $6 a bag. A bag of the sugar free chocolate chips is only 8 ounces, so that sounds like a complete rip off to me. Plus they also want $6 more just to ship a bag, so I’m sorry, I’m not spending $12 for a half pound of sugar free chocolate chips.

CHESS In Concert DVD & CDs Available Tuesday

Chess In ConcertIf you think the only musical theatre entry of Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson of ABBA is MAMMA MIA!, you’d be wrong. Shortly after the last songs of ABBA’s catalogue were completed, the members of ABBA decided to take a break from the group, and Björn & Benny decided to try their hand at writing a musical. Tim Rice, well known for his collaborations with Andrew Lloyd Webber, was in the market for new composers to work with for his idea of building a musical around the idea of a Chess championship. After having met Björn & Benny and deciding to work together, the process of bringing Chess to life was born.

Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice established a successful formula of trying out the songs from shows they wrote in a “Concept Album” format that got released to the public long before a staged version of the show got made. This methodology was an invaluable way to see if the songs were good enough to warrant the time and expense of launching a full scale musical. Instead of going to the expense of launching a full show, it’s a chance to release the album to the public and see if it generates enough interest. If the album tanks, a fortune has been saved, and if it succeeds, then it creates an audience for the show when it gets launched.

T-Shirt Hell Brings Back Favorite Canadian Shirt

Canadians Are Eh-HolesT-Shirt Hell, the home of funny, but sometimes rude and crude t-shirts, has brought back their “Canadian’s Are Eh-Holes” t-shirt design. As a Canadian, I find the shirt highly amusing to play off the so called over-use of “Eh” in the Canadian vernacular. What I love best about the shirt is that the logo design is a complete spoof of the label from Molson Canadian Beer.

As T-Shirt Hell likes to rotate their selection of available choices around, if you would love to get a “Canadian’s Are Eh-Holes” shirt, I would recommend getting one as quickly as possible. I had personally been badgering them to bring back this shirt as I really wanted one for myself (and now that I can get them, I’ve ordered two.) I love the sense of humor of the shirt as it’s very much in line with the South Park movie where humorously the village of South Park instigates a full scale war with Canada.

Great Deal On A Netbook From TigerDirect

I just took advantage of a great deal from TigerDirect.com on an Acer Aspire One Netbook. I’ve been wanting to try a netbook and TigerDirect offered a price I couldn’t refuse. $229.99 and $1.99 for shipping. Sure it’s a refurbished model, but the best deals are usually on refurbished products and I’ve always had good luck buying refurbished items. Click here if you want to check out the details on the model I purchased, and you can even pick one up for yourself if they still have any left.

Normally I would have opted for an HP netbook as most of my last few computers have all been HP products and I quite like their machines. But I picked up a great deal on an Acer desktop PC right after Christmas (also from TigerDirect) that I am willing to give one of Acer’s ultra portable PCs a chance. I like the idea of the netbooks being so portable that I’m sure I’ll be reaching for it far more than I will my other PCs. I currently have a HP laptop with a 14 inch screen and at the time I bought it, it was the best deal I could find on a laptop with as small as screen as possible. Sony’s VAIO series offered smaller ones but for outrageously higher prices, but the truth is I really wanted something with a smaller screen because the lighter it is, the more practical it becomes to take with you. At least that’s my opinion.

Jesus H. Christ – An $18 Movie Ticket For Star Trek in IMAX

Star Trek - The IMAX PosterYou know movies are getting to be expensive when it costs about the same to see it on screen as it does to buy the DVD when it comes out. Talk about fleecing the hell out of consumers. In this case, it’s the insanely expensive ticket to see “Star Trek” this Thursday night on an IMAX screen at the Regal Cinema in Escondido.

I’m hoping the experience will be good because this will be the first mainstream movie I’ve seen in IMAX since “Spider-Man 3”, a couple years ago. At the time it was the premiere feature at the Edwards Cinema in Mira Mesa which was just opening it’s IMAX theatre. Basically it converted one of it’s largest theaters into an IMAX auditorium. And I caught a 6 am showing of the movie (the third screening since the midnight premiere showing) and I was a little underwhelmed by the IMAX experience. It could just be that “Spider-Man 3” was a not quite the best film, but I do think the auditorium contributed to the experience, as I felt the screen was just not size wise up to par for an IMAX experience. All my previous IMAX experiences have been at theme parks with these giant larger than life screens, and this screen just felt average. Not quite the sensory overload experience I was hoping for.
