I’m sad to report that two great shows on Broadway are closing down in early September. Avenue Q, which has been running since July 2003 will close on September 13th, 2009. The musical 9 to 5 which opened in April of this year will be closing on September 6th, 2009. I’m really disappointed because I love both shows and was hoping at least to see 9 to 5 when I go to New York in late September and both will be done and gone by then.

Avenue Q, I first saw during its run in Las Vegas at the Wynn Hotel and then saw it a few more times when it was here in San Diego before launching its national tour. I saw 9 to 5 during it’s pre-Broadway tryout in Los Angeles. The sad part with the 9 to 5 closing is that it was announced the day after the cast album was officially in stores nationwide.

In any case, both shows will live on in Touring versions. Avenue Q is currently on tour and 9 To 5 will launch on tour in Nashville in September 2010.

For the last week I’ve had a sore throat and for the last couple of days it has blown into quite a painful experience. After deciding I’ve tried to ride it out long enough, I sought the best way to seek some medical attention. I didn’t feel like making an appointment with a doctor’s office that would take days before the doctor would have time to see me, and I didn’t feel it urgent enough to visit a hospital or urgent care center, so I thought I should check online to see what could be a step down from Urgent care that I could get in to see rather quickly.

In my search online I came across the Palomar Pomerado Health (PPH) care group and a section of their website indicating they had a couple of retail based clinics operating inside a couple of local San Diego county Albertsons stores, called PPH Expresscare. They operate as a small clinic inside the grocery store as a way to bring more a-la-carte care to the community for both the insured and the uninsured at reasonable prices and more convenient hours than a traditional doctor’s office. As the clinic is part of the PPH group, if the care required for any services needs to be more involved than can be provided in the clinic, the patients can be referred to urgent care or hospital services elsewhere in the group.

Jorge Cruise recently posted to YouTube a trailer for his upcoming “Death By Sugar” documentary. The footage that’s included in the trailer is from the sugar experiments that I helped Jorge out with on July 16th. As opposed to the other YouTube clips that were shot on Jorge Cruise’s iPhone, this footage is from the professionally filmed footage taken by Jared Davis.

The short four minute clip provides a good overview of the blood analysis that Dr. Stefan Bajon conducted on my blood both before and after consuming 200 grams of sugar. The initial analysis showed I had very healthy blood featuring individualized cells which help produce energy and carry oxygen throughout my body. In the words of Dr. Bajon, “That is about as healthy a picture of blood as I could ever see.” Definitely a great encouraging thing to see and hear when being checked out by the doctor.

We then followed that up with the consumption of about 200 grams of sugar, which included a large banana, a cup of yogurt, two low-fat Strawberry Pop Tarts, as well as a glass of Orange Juice and a 20 oz. Pepsi. Overall not a lot of food, but easily what a lot of people would consume as a breakfast and maybe an additional snack too. These are all things commonly found in just about any kitchen.

As you may recall, I wrote about on May 5th, that Oprah Winfrey was partnering up with Kentucky Fried Chicken, or KFC to offer coupons for a free Grilled Chicken meal to celebrate the nationwide launch of KFC’s new Grilled Chicken. (Click here to read that blog entry.) The coupons caused a frenzy and basically became a nightmare for KFC and Oprah Winfrey. KFC shut down the redeeming of the coupons and began collecting them along with mailing information for each customer presenting them so that they could mail them a “Rain check” voucher which would now include a Pepsi where the original offer didn’t include a beverage. And on May 8th I reported about the very rude KFC employee I encountered when I presented my coupon. (Click here to read the blog entry for that.)

Considering how rude the employee at the Poway KFC that I went to with my original coupon was, I was beginning to have my doubts that I was going to receive my rain check as I was supposed to. I just didn’t trust that the store was going to send in the coupons to the main office they said they would and just when I was beginning to feel that my wait had been a bit excessive and I was starting to think about writing a complaint letter to the company, my rain check voucher showed up in the mail.

My good friend Liesbeth was very kind to bring me back a tube of Nestlé Smarties from the Netherlands when she attended the International ABBA Fan Club’s Annual ABBA Day in Roosendaal back in April. I was unable to attend myself this year, and I had asked if she would be so kind as to bring me back some Smarties from her trip. As I mentioned in my previous blog post, sometimes it’s good to get a little bit of the goodies you grew up on, but aren’t available in the area you currently live. In this case, a tube of Smarties candies which are available in several countries, just not the United States.

As Liesbeth returned and presented me with the tube of Smarties, I was within my first couple of weeks on the Belly Fat Cure program by Jorge Cruise. So I wasn’t going to be able to enjoy the whole tube in a single sitting or even spreading it out to two or three sittings. I wasn’t sure of the exact sugar content as the Dutch nutrition labeling didn’t quite give me the information I was looking for, so I peeked at Nestlé’s website in Canada to see what the Canadian version of Smarties had for sugar content and basically, in order to enjoy this tube of Smarties, I was going to have to limit myself to about five pieces a day. Which I was perfectly willing to do in order to enjoy my Smarties and be compliant with the Belly Fat Cure program.

One of the things that I suppose is both good and bad about growing up in one place and moving to another is that you get to experience different things, but you also get nostalgic for the things that you can’t get in the new place that were readily available where you used to live. So as a Canadian living in San Diego, I tend to miss some of the things that were readily available in Canada that aren’t readily available here in San Diego. Fortunately, there are some great Canadians who are helping make sure former Canadians can get their fix for Canadian items, such as Rob and Elena Peters.

In what is becoming a more common way of meeting people, I met Elena Peters through Twitter. Somehow she found one of my twitter accounts and started following me. I occasionally peek at who is following me on my twitter accounts I was certainly curious about this “GoCanuck” that was following me, so I clicked over to read some of the tweets made on Twitter as well as follow the link to her site. It looks like Elena spends some time in San Diego every year and I had unfortunately just missed her most recent visit which included a Canada Day celebration that sounded like a fun event to be at. I certainly would have gone to celebrate Canada Day with other Canadians here in San Diego if I had known about the event beforehand.

I’m excited to report that the folks of San Diego’s North County now have their first Which Wich? Sandwich shop. I’ve previously reported about my first experience at the Hillcrest Which Wich? shop. (Click here to read about my first visit to Which Wich?). For those unfamiliar with the concept of how Which Wich? works, you enter the store and grab a bag for the category of sandwich you want, then using a supplied Red Sharpie pen, you check off all the toppings and condiments you want on the sandwich as well as your name at the bottom, then take the bag to the register to pay and then the sandwich will be prepared exactly to your specifications while you wait a couple of short minutes. No muss, no fuss, no having to shout over a glass separator and pointing at toppings, just a sandwich made exactly how you want it.

With my good friend Patsy Ledene from my hometown of Calgary, I wanted to introduce her to Which Wich? and their amazing sandwiches. Since she was already in Carlsbad staying with another friend of hers in the San Diego area, it seemed almost funny that when I went to pick her up, the Forum shopping center that Which Wich is in, just happens to be the closest shopping center to where I was meeting Patsy. Our first order of business was finding where in the shopping center Which Wich? is located. We ended up driving past several shops before we finally found it.

One of the cast albums I’ve most been looking forward to has finally been released – sort of. Last week, the cast album for “9 To 5″ got released digitally, next week it gets released on CD. It seems a little unprecedented to stagger the releases for a Broadway show, but it seems to allow the label to double dip where the gotta-have-it-now crowd can get their instant gratification and those that prefer to have the physical product can wait a couple weeks longer or get both.

In the case of “9 To 5″ I fall into the crowd that will double dip. I saw the stage production last September when it premiered in Los Angeles for it’s Pre-Broadway trial run. The show written by Patricia Resnick, the original screenwriter of the classic film, along with songs written by one of the original film’s stars, Dolly Parton, have come together to bring the classic to life in a new form. One of the disadvantages of seeing the show early is that the cast album wasn’t readily available to purchase following seeing the show, so I’ve had to wait from September until now. So the early digital release version, was a no brainer for me, and because I will want the physical edition, I’ll be getting that too.

Amazon recently approved the publishing of this blog in a format compliant with their Kindle devices. All that’s needed is an Amazon Kindle and a monthly subscription.
