Australia’s Barry Humphries is bringing his legendary character, Dame Edna Everage, to San Diego the first week of June. The character with distinctive glasses and mauve hair is a self-proclaimed global megastar, and downright a comedy legend. According to legend, Dame Edna originates as once having been a simple housewife from Moonie Ponds, a suburb of Melbourne, Australia.

The character of Dame Edna has taken on a remarkable life of its own doing everything from stand-up comedy shows (such as the one coming to San Diego) to hosting variety specials (such as “The Dame Edna Experience” for the BBC and more recently “The Dame Edna Treatment” for ITV) as well as hosting a peculiar game show called “Dame Edna’s Neighborhood Watch” where really the game show is a set-up for one unsuspecting woman who’s about to see her home ransacked by a tv camera crew and Dame Edna’s bridesmaid, Madge Allsop (played by the late Emily Perry).

I saw Dame Edna’s appearance in Los Angeles during her “Back With A Vengeance Tour” and I was excited to see San Diego included on this tour entitled “The First Last Tour.” I’m attending on the night of Thursday, June 4th, and would to invite others in San Diego to join me for the show. I just took advantage of a great deal from TigerDirect.com on an Acer Aspire One Netbook. I’ve been wanting to try a netbook and TigerDirect offered a price I couldn’t refuse. $229.99 and $1.99 for shipping. Sure it’s a refurbished model, but the best deals are usually on refurbished products and I’ve always had good luck buying refurbished items. Normally I would have opted for an HP netbook as most of my last few computers have all been HP products and I quite like their machines. But I picked up a great deal on an Acer desktop PC right after Christmas (also from TigerDirect) that I am willing to give one of Acer’s ultra portable PCs a chance. I like the idea of the netbooks being so portable that I’m sure I’ll be reaching for it far more than I will my other PCs. I currently have a HP laptop with a 14 inch screen and at the time I bought it, it was the best deal I could find on a laptop with as small as screen as possible. Sony’s VAIO series offered smaller ones but for outrageously higher prices, but the truth is I really wanted something with a smaller screen because the lighter it is, the more practical it becomes to take with you. At least that’s my opinion.

I’ve been hesitant to write a review for the movie because it was just an absolutely amazing experience. I saw the film on the night of its release in IMAX and in the week since seeing it for the first time, saw it two additional times. And to be honest, I might go back and see it again, at least one more time. It was just brilliant. Star Trek is officially revived.

J.J. Abrams, who directed and produced the film, has made it quite clear that he was not a Star Trek fan, but wisely decided to surround himself with people who were. Additionally in developing the characters of the Original cast characters, Abrams conducted interviews with the surviving cast members to get their insights into their portrayals of the characters so that it could help guide how the new cast members would fill those roles. Tapping Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman, two long time fans, to write the screenplay, the script brilliantly is laced with loving references to the Original Series as well as previous films that provide the ultimate homage to all that has come before. It also is a welcome tribute to the long time fans because it’s like an acknowledgment that the script is in the hands of people who want to do justice to the legacy of Star Trek without trampling over it.

Best Buy stores are offering an incredible deal this week for Star Trek fans who want a great deal picking up the new Star Trek Movies collection on Blu-Ray if they also pick up a brand new Samsung Blu-Ray Player.

As the Star Trek Movies collection got released this week in two special box sets, the first of which is the set of all six Original Cast movies from “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” through “Star Trek Vi: The Undiscovered Country” and includes an exclusive seventh disc “The Captain’s Summit” which features a seventy minute round table discussion between William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, and hosted by Whoopi Goldberg. Yesterday, after visiting my mom for Mother’s Day, I stopped at the Apple Store at Westfield – North County Fair and needed to exchange the Nike+ sensor I had bought in December because I couldn’t get it to work yesterday and I thought it might be a dead battery. The battery is supposed to be good for 1,000 miles, but so far I’ve only gotten about 200 miles on it. So I was a little ticked off that it wasn’t working so I could get in a 2 mile run before visiting my mom.

Before I determined the battery was the most likely source of the problem, I thought the 3.0 beta of the Operating System (OS) was causing the problem. I had managed to get a few runs in using the new OS, even though a couple of those runs ended up not being tracked because the Nike application crashed the iPod. Just to be sure I reinstalled the Operating System but that didn’t fix the problem. So on that basis I figured it was the battery causing the problem.

Well I printed off my purchase receipt since the store emailed me my receipt at the time of purchase. (How cool is that?) And sure enough, I walked right in, talked to one of the employees at the Apple Store and they were more than happy to help me out with no grief whatsoever. The Nike+ sensor was exchanged for a new one in just a matter of minutes and they even went so far as to renew the warranty to the date of the exchange as opposed to the original purchase. I am extremely impressed with the service I received at the Escondido Apple Store. It’s so rare to see service that doesn’t treat you like a criminal for needing assistance. I am so happy to be recommending their stores.

After what a complete pain in the rear it was to even get a copy of the coupon in the first place, now KFC had decided to not honor the coupons at all. Instead what they are doing is having you exchange the coupon for a rain check form where you can attach the original coupon and mail it in, or give it to the store manager and they will send it in for you, and KFC will mail you a new coupon, that not only has the original deal, but this time includes a free Pepsi beverage.

As I mentioned in my blog post the other day about the process of getting a coupon in the first place, this cluster fuck has basically turned into a public relations nightmare, because not only were some locations (mostly franchisee locations) refusing to honor the coupons (fair enough, coupon does say participating locations), but the company pulls the plug on them despite the May 19th expiration date. And that doesn’t even include how angry the PETA folks that are all about animal abuse are at Oprah Winfrey for even being involved in such a giveaway. Just goes to show you can’t please everyone all of the time.

I’ve had a few days to test drive the new iPhone Operating System (OS) on my iPod Touch and it’s been fun and interesting trying out the new software. I am currently on the Beta 4 version of the software which was released about a week ago.

So far, the new features like the search and being able to cut and paste have been pretty cool but for me seems to be of limited use my iPod Touch is primarily an iPod. I don’t manage a contact database on it, and I use it for rather limited Internet use, like some web browsing and checking e-mail. I’ve really been impressed with the new and improved maps application. It now provides turn by turn directions and can even map you routes for a car, walking, and bus routes. Granted the bus routes have some limited application in terms of distances covered. They even allow easy access to Google’s street view images. I’ve been playing with that a little bit. Really nicely improved tool. Also the music player has been improved slightly in that the slider for the position in the song works a little more easily and they’ve improved how it handles audio books, such as a feature to repeat the last 30 seconds in place of the Genius logo.

The catch is you have to download the coupon today between 9:00 am and 9:59 pm Central time. The coupon remains valid everyday until the 19th with the exception of May 10th due to Mother’s Day. (Do you really want to treat your mother to KFC for Mother’s Day?)

The promotion originally required visitors to download the coupon by first going to UnthinKFC.com and it would provide a link to Coupons.com where it would allow you to print a single coupon that’s individualized with a barcode so each coupon could only be used once. Well the site powering it requires the installation of a proprietary coupon printing software so you can’t save the coupon, but only print it immediately.
